Through the generosity of thousands of donors, CICF is the steward for more than $480 million in charitable assets.  CICF transforms central Indiana in three ways:

  • by consulting donors, family foundations, and their professional advisors on charitable giving;
  • awarding grants to effective not-for-profit organizations; and
  • providing leadership to address community needs and seize opportunities.

CICF was established in 1997 as a partnership between The Indianapolis Foundation, serving Marion County since 1916, and Legacy Fund, serving Hamilton County since 1991.

CICF’s mission is to inspire, support, and practice philanthropy, leadership, and service in our community.  Our work is centered on our vision for central Indiana’s future. We envision our community being:

  • recognized for its superior support to those in need,
  • acknowledged for its ability to develop, retain and attract educated, creative and community-minded citizens,
  • admired for being a remarkable place to live.

What is a community foundation?
A community foundation is a tax-exempt public charity created by and for the people in a specific geographic area. It enables people with philanthropic interests to easily and effectively support the issues they care about — immediately or through their estate plans. Donors may give to existing funds or establish a charitable fund by contributing a variety of assets. Community endowment funds, allow gifts to grow and be leveraged with other gifts, allowing larger grants with greater impact. Donors may also recommend grants through their own fund to charitable, 501c(3) organizations they want to support.
