1000 Words

1000 Words is a non-profit, Black-owned art space located in the heart of Indianapolis, deeply committed to uplifting emerging BIPOC visual artists. Our mission is clear: offer a platform for our local artists, champion equity, and ensure art is accessible to all.

About 1000 Words

Founded in 2020 on Indianapolis’s Near Eastside, 1000 Words is built on one belief: Emerging artists deserve to keep everything they earn. As a commission-free gallery, 100% of every sale goes directly to the artist.

We’ve worked with 100+ local artists through four programs: our Commission-Free Exhibition Series; the Business of Art Cohort, which teaches artists the business skills to sustain a creative practice. Our last cohort saw a 66% increase in financial confidence in just four weeks; LIT (Literacy, Illustration & Transformation), pairing youth literacy with visual art; and Neighborhood Creative Placemaking, using public art and events to strengthen our community.

Funding would sustain this work directly: artist stipends and exhibition costs, facilitator fees, art making materials, and the staff capacity to keep growing our presence and capacity. Every gift puts money in working artists’ hands today while building the infrastructure that lets 1000 Words keep growing.
