Helpings of Hope
Helpings of Hope is dedicated to eliminating hunger and food waste and creating food security through community-driven projects that provide affordable, nutritious food for people in areas that would be considered food deserts.

About Helpings of Hope
Helpings of Hope began more than a decade ago as a small volunteer-run project growing food for neighbors in need. Today, our urban farm and community garden are thriving, thanks to a staff of seven and a network of volunteers, operating from our primary 2-acre site in the vibrant Nora neighborhood and additional satellite farms across Indianapolis.
Our mission is clear: We empower people living in food deserts by providing sustainable food sources, educational resources, and spaces to grow produce tied to their heritage. We envision an Indianapolis where everyone has access to affordable, culturally meaningful food, the tools to nourish their families, and a thriving connection to their community and the land. Helpings of Hope respectfully requests funding for operational costs to support essential operational expenses that will enable us to continue addressing food insecurity in Indianapolis and Marion County. These funds will help offset the most critical cost that makes all of our programs possible–our staff. This core operational investment allows us to deliver comprehensive, culturally responsive, community-based solutions to food insecurity in Marion County. This funding will ensure that we have the necessary resources to operate our programs and continue to provide critical workforce development opportunities, including green workforce upskilling. For example, Antonio, one of our farm assistants, came to the U.S. just a year ago. Helpings of Hope was his first job opportunity, serving as a pathway for his green card and driver’s license acquisition, and providing English classes and financial literacy support. He can communicate in Portuguese with our Farm Manager, Nate, making the workplace culturally inclusive. Our organization serves as an initial employer, helping to springboard new immigrants toward other employment opportunities. Our culturally relevant, community-driven solutions are rooted in food, education, and economic empowerment. Through this work, we will close systemic gaps, creating healthier, more resilient communities where all residents have the resources to thrive.
