About the Bus Tour

Philanthropy often steps in when people and communities are already facing a challenge. But what if we could also help change the conditions that contribute to those challenges in the first place?

Join fellow fundholders, philanthropic leaders and professional advisors for an afternoon of conversations, site visits and learning about what it means to look upstream. The event is free, and you’re welcome to bring a guest.

Throughout the afternoon, you’ll hear from organizations tackling complex community challenges—from homelessness, food insecurity, and healthcare access to environmental sustainability—and exploring how journalism, civic participation, economic mobility, legal advocacy, and policy change can help address their root causes. Their approaches are different, but they share the common goal of addressing root causes and creating the conditions for people and communities to thrive.

What to Expect

We’ll begin with a conversation featuring representatives from Streets to Home/CHIP, Indiana Justice Project and the Indiana Conservation Fund. Together, we’ll explore the different strategies these organizations are using to address complex community challenges and consider where philanthropy can play a role.

From there, we’ll continue the conversation with two stops that bring these ideas to life:

Stop One | Free Press Indiana & Mirror Indy
Explore how Free Press Indiana and Mirror Indy approach nonprofit, community-centered journalism and consider the role local news and information can play in civic participation.

Stop Two | John Boner Neighborhood Centers & Edna Martin Christian Center
Learn how John Boner Neighborhood Centers and Edna Martin Christian Center are testing guaranteed income approaches, what they are learning so far, and what questions these efforts raise about economic mobility, health, family well-being and community vitality.

We’ll return to Machyne at 16 Tech around 4 p.m. for an optional reception with refreshments, reflection and networking. You’re welcome to stay until 5 p.m. to enjoy a drink and light bites, reflect on the afternoon, and continue the conversation with fellow members of our philanthropic community.
