Greenways Foundation
Greenways Foundation champions Indiana’s network of trails to enhance the sustainability and health of communities across the state.

About the Greenways Foundation
Greenways Foundation is Indiana’s only statewide nonprofit dedicated exclusively to advancing trails through advocacy and grantmaking. Since 1991, we have championed Indiana’s trail network to strengthen communities, improve public health, and expand access to safe, connected outdoor spaces for all Hoosiers.
Greenways Foundation operates with a focused and sustainable model. Our trail grantmaking program is funded through Indiana’s “I Support Trails” specialty license plate, which generates annual revenue to directly support local trail development and stewardship projects. Since 2012, this program has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars into trail projects across Indiana, helping communities improve access, connectivity, and trail quality.
In addition to grantmaking, Greenways Foundation leads statewide advocacy efforts to protect and expand trail funding and policy. Through the Indiana Trails Advocates Coalition (ITAC), a network of more than 400 trail advocates and organizations, we mobilize Hoosiers to support trail-friendly legislation, engage local and state leaders, and advocate for public investment in trail infrastructure. Our current priority is securing $20 million in dedicated state funding for trails during Indiana’s 2027 budget cycle.
While our grantmaking program is sustained through specialty plate revenue, philanthropic donations are essential to power our advocacy work, day-to-day operations, and fundraising efforts. These unrestricted funds support staff capacity, coalition-building, legislative education, communications, donor engagement, and organizational growth.
Funding for Greenways Foundation is an investment in Indiana’s future. By supporting our advocacy and operational capacity, donors help ensure that trail funding remains a statewide priority and that communities across Indiana continue to benefit from safe, accessible, and connected trail systems for generations to come.
