About IYG

IYG (formerly Indiana Youth Group) is North America’s oldest continuously operating organization dedicated to LGBTQ+ young people. Founded in Indianapolis by Chris Gonzalez and Jeff Werner, it has grown from small living-room gatherings into a nationally recognized leader serving thousands of youth and young adults each year. Today, IYG exists to ensure that every LGBTQ+ young person has access to safer spaces, meaningful connections, and the support they need to thrive as their authentic selves.

At its core, IYG creates affirming, client-centered environments where young people are not only safe, but seen, valued, and celebrated. Through leadership development programs, peer support groups, mental health services, and educational workshops, participants build confidence, resilience, and lifelong skills. IYG also works beyond its walls—partnering with families, schools, and community organizations to foster understanding, expand acceptance, and advance inclusive policies that protect and uplift LGBTQ+ youth.

The need for this work is urgent. LGBTQ+ young people experience disproportionately high rates of bullying, homelessness, and mental health challenges, often as a result of rejection and discrimination. IYG directly addresses these disparities by removing barriers to care—offering free mental health support, access to basic needs like food and clothing, and consistent connection to affirming adults. Research shows that even one supportive adult can dramatically reduce a young person’s risk of suicide; IYG ensures that no young person has to navigate these challenges alone.

Beyond direct services, IYG strengthens communities across Indiana. Through its LGBTQ+ Cultural Competency and Professional Development programs, it equips educators, employers, and service providers with the tools to create more inclusive environments. Its visibility efforts—including the IYG specialty license plate available through the Indiana Bureau of Motor Vehicles—offer a powerful, everyday symbol of support for LGBTQ+ youth across the state. IYG also advocates at the local, state, and national levels to advance equity and protect LGBTQ+ young people, helping to build a more inclusive and welcoming Indiana for all.

Sustaining this impact requires ongoing investment. IYG relies on the generosity of individuals, businesses, and community partners to fund its life-changing work. Financial contributions directly support programs, mental health services, and basic needs assistance for young people across the state. In-kind donations, event sponsorships, and contributions to its annual auction help expand reach and deepen impact, while legacy giving ensures this critical work continues for generations to come.

Every dollar donated is an investment in safety, belonging, and possibility. By supporting IYG, donors help create spaces where LGBTQ+ young people are empowered to grow, lead, and build brighter futures—strengthening not only individual lives, but the fabric of communities across Indiana.
