Speedway Animal Rescue

Speedway Animal Rescue's mission is to divert unclaimed stray animals found within Speedway limits into foster homes to prevent them from entering city shelters. In addition, SAR provides resources and education to residents in need.

About Speedway Animal Rescue

Speedway Animal Rescue partners exclusively with the Town of Speedway to assist with animal control within Speedway limits. As an excluded town, Speedway does not receive services from Indianapolis Animal Control. Instead, Speedway maintains a short-term holding facility for stray animals. Dogs and cats are held for a 4-day stray hold. If no owner comes forward, the ordinance states these animals are to be relinquished to Indianapolis Animal Care Services or Speedway Animal Rescue. To prevent these unclaimed stray animals from entering the shelter system, SAR places them into foster homes. Once in foster, animals are vetted and placed for adoption. Each year, SAR prevents approximately 100 animals from entering the shelter. In 2025, SAR maintained a 100% diversion rate. SAR also provides resources and education to community members and supplies the Wayne Township Trustee with supplies for their pet food bank. Additionally, SAR’s robust cat adoption program allows SAR to assist other organizations with finding homes for difficult-to-adopt cats. Speedway Animal Rescue is 100% volunteer, and 100% foster-based. In 2025, 80% of funding went toward vetting animals prior to adoption, including spay/neuter, vaccinations, heartworm testing, microchipping, parasite prevention, and life-saving surgery. The remaining funds went toward operational costs (cell phone, box truck rental for receiving donations) (10%), kennel upgrade project (4%), animal supplies (4%), and boarding (2%).
