About the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis
The mission of the YMCA of Greater Indianapolis is to put Christian principles into practice that build healthy spirit, mind, and body for all. Its vision is to build a healthier, more equitable, more connected community. The YMCA of Greater Indianapolis (YMCA) is made up of 11 centers plus three program offices and an overnight camp. These serve Boone, Hamilton, Hancock, Hendricks, Johnson, and Marion counties, with a total population of nearly 2.2 million people. Three program offices serve as a central hub to direct services across the region, in direct correlation to the YMCA’s three pillars:
- Healthy Living: evidence-based health programs to reduce the impact of chronic disease, especially diabetes, cancer care, arthritis, and hypertension; partnership with healthcare providers, including the VA Medical Center to serve Veterans; fitness, including Active Older Adult programs; water safety to reduce the high drowning rate in minority communities; and youth sports, where children are encouraged to make physical activity a lifelong habit.
- Social Responsibility: certifications in high-demand careers for struggling adults; youth empowerment programs that provide tiered, comprehensive career planning and skills training; and a youth civics program that culminates in a mock legislation session at the Indiana Statehouse.
- Youth Development: the region’s largest provider of out-of-school time childcare; seven early learning centers, licensed at Paths to Quality Level 3 or pursuing it; before- and after-school programming that provides children with a safe place to be during the parts of the day that children are most susceptible to being a victim of crime; and day camps and an overnight camp that build lifelong enjoyment of the outdoors and memories of friendship and challenge.
