The Matthew L. Tully Memorial Fund

The Matthew L. Tully Memorial Fund was established by his family in 2018 to honor the legacy of Indianapolis Star political columnist Matthew Tully. In addition to being a loving and devoted husband and father, Matt cared deeply about the Indianapolis community. That passion was perhaps most evident in Matt’s coverage of education issues, including the importance of funding high-quality early childhood education so that all children, regardless of their socioeconomic backgrounds, could benefit from a strong start that would carry through their lives.

Matt joined the Indy Star as a reporter in 2002 and later become the paper’s political columnist. He previously worked in Washington, DC, covering the U.S. Senate for Congressional Quarterly and began his career as a reporter for the Gary Post-Tribune in Northwest Indiana in 1992.

In 2012, Matt authored Searching for Hope, which told the powerful stories of students and faculty at Manual High School in Indianapolis. In addition to providing political commentary on MSNBC, NPR and numerous other national media outlets, Matt was named Indiana Journalist of the Year in 2008 and won the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism in 2010.

Throughout his career, Matt wrote extensively about the impact of early childhood education on kids’ growing brains and was a strong voice advocating for state investment in On My Way Pre-K, which started as a pilot program in 2014 and expanded to the entire state in 2019.

Sadly, state funding for On My Way Pre-K has been drastically reduced, leaving many families unable to afford the type of educational programing their young children deserve. Through the Matthew L. Tully Memorial Fund, Matt’s family hopes to increase awareness of this growing need and provide financial support to organizations directly serving families.

Since its inception, the Matthew L. Tully Memorial Fund has donated more than $170,000 to organizations in central Indiana to support children and families. It honors Matt for his generous spirit, his love of family and friends, and his undying devotion to the Chicago Cubs – win or lose.
