Request for Qualifications: CICF Chatham Arch Conference Room Artwork

Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF) is seeking an artist to create a large-scale, original artwork for the Chatham Arch Conference Room in its offices at the English Foundation Building (615 N. Alabama St). The artwork is anticipated to be completed by September 2023. One artist or artist team will be selected for this commission.

COMMISSION FEE: $10,000 (all-inclusive commission fee covers artist labor, materials, travel expenses, etc.) 

ELIGIBILITY: Visual artist must be over 18, a resident of Central Indiana (either Marion, Hamilton, Boone, Hendricks, Morgan, Johnson, Shelby and Hancock county) and legally able to work in the United States. This opportunity is available to visual artists working in any medium, including painting, ceramics, digital arts, textile and fiber arts, etc.

Description of Opportunity

Central Indiana Community Foundation is inviting artists interested in creating an original, large-scale, signature artwork to be installed in the Chatham Arch conference room at the CICF offices in Downtown Indianapolis. The artist or artist team is asked to provide information about themselves and their work for consideration for a commission.

The Chatham Arch conference room wall is 202” x 110” (see images below). The mural design will gain inspiration from CICF’s mission and core values. Additional information about CICF, its partners, and its activities will be provided to the finalist artists.

The $10,000 commission fee includes compensation for artists’ engagements with CICF staff, design work, materials, labor, equipment rentals (if needed), etc.


Informational Artist Workshop

CICF will host a workshop on Wednesday, March 1 at 6 p.m. in the Chatham Arch conference room at CICF (615 N. Alabama St, #300) for artists interested in learning more about the opportunity and the foundation. Artists will have an opportunity to connect with CICF staff to ask deeper questions about the foundation’s mission and values and review the site for the original artwork. Light refreshments will be provided.

There will be a virtual option for those unable to attend in person.

Selection Process

  1. Applicants will be initially screened for completeness, and if anything is missing, a CICF representative will contact them to provide additional information.
  2. The internal CICF Art Committee will review all artist applications to identify three (3) finalists.
  3. Finalists will be compensated $500 each and given time to create design concepts. The CICF Art Committee will review submitted design concepts and will identify the concept they wish to commission.
  4. The selected artist will enter into a commissioning agreement with the Central Indiana Community Foundation for project execution.

Selection Criteria

Although the artist pool itself is not juried, the following criteria will be used by the CICF Art Committee when identifying three (3) artists as finalists to create design proposals:

  • Artistic merit
    • Does the artist have a signature style?
    • Does the artist create designs that are visually striking and culturally competent?
  • Technical expertise
    • Does the artist have experience working at the scale that will be required?
    • Has the artist used the materials and techniques that will result in the artwork lasting for many years with minimal required maintenance?
  • Values alignment
    • Does the artist’s work and practice align with the mission and values of CICF?
    • Does the artist incorporate or center joy in their work?
  • Ease of process
    • Does the artist have a record of completing similar projects on time and within budget?

Special consideration will be given to artists who have historically been denied opportunities of this scale because of their race, gender or other marginalized identities.
