Q&A with Emily Ambriz

Meet emily ambriz. Emily is the marketing and communications manager at women’s fund, a cicf affiliate.

What excites you about your new role?

I am so excited to help share the stories of Women’s Fund. Since no one has been in a marketing role full-time, the sky is the limit and I have a really incredible chance to use my creativity.

In this past year, what book, movie or album resonated with you in the strongest way and why?

In my personal reading challenge this year, I was struck by One to Watch by Kate Stayman-London. As a sucker for the Bachelor franchise, it was fun to read a story with a more body-positive approach. There is a lot of shame and stigma still around plus size women, so it was powerful for me to read about a strong, intelligent character navigate a setting that is typically only for fit white men and women.

What’s one thing you’re learning now, and why is it important?

One thing I am learning now is how to use my white appearance to help educate on issues affecting the Latinx community. I used to think it was hard to be a “pale brown person,” but once I realized I can be using my opportunities of white privilege to positively raise awareness, it gave me a greater sense of urgency in making people aware of issues that affect people who may or may not look similar to them.

What’s your favorite way to unwind after a busy day?

My favorite way to unwind after a busy day is to knit product for my Etsy shop. After a long day (and year) of staring at a screen, it’s nice to create something beautiful with my hands that other people will get to enjoy.

What’s your most recent act of equity?

My most recent act of equity is being purposeful in choosing female vendors to assist in professional settings. There are so many talented women in Indianapolis who deserve our business and recognition.
