Youth Assistance Program

WHEN ADOLESCENTS ENTER THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM, IT CAN BE DIFFICULT TO GET OUT.

The Hamilton County Juvenile Services Center was built in Noblesville in 2007 based on projections that it would need to house at least 50 youth. In 2009, the Youth Assistance Program, an in-school intervention program focused on stemming juvenile crime by helping at-risk kids before they commit crimes, launched a pilot program in Westfield, Indiana. In 2013, Legacy Fund, a CICF affiliate serving Hamilton County, began its support of the Youth Assistance Program. With the help of cities and leaders throughout the county, program services are now available at all six county high schools.

But has the program worked?

The facility is now at 14 percent capacity and youth being detained is half of what it was at its height in 2009.

It’s been a collaborative effort – city officials, school administrators, donors – have made this program possible.
